I live in Canada, and the town I live is damn hot in the summer, and very cold in the winter. The temperature can swing from 16 degrees Fahrenheit to 90 degrees, it is so terrible that we talk about the weather day after day. As we need to cooling or heating our homes so frequently that the energy cost is always high. We all want to cut the energy bill down to save money. Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd

If you like the space-age look, you will like the Nest. It is round shaped with a round screen. The screen is bright, easy to understand, the color changed from orange to blue when heating or cooling, if it doesn’t work at all, it will be a black background and white text, and the degree is in the center. A green leaf will light up when it is save energy for you.

Some Features I Like

Lights Up When Pass By

This function was added in the 2nd Generation Nest Learning Thermostat, now the 3rd Generation can do it better, it’s called Farsight. With the Farsight, Nest can light up when you pass it or at a place where the remote sensor is located. When it light up, you can see the temperature or something else on the screen such as digital or analog clock. With the large screen of the 3rd Nest, you can see it from across the room.

Simple Installation

Just pop off the old thermostat and change it to the new Nest. That’s all. It will take you 30 minutes to do that.

Know Your Home is Safe

Although Nest is only one of the heating and cooling system, it can provide other functions to keep your home safe thanks to its wireless remote control apps. If anything is wrong with your home, you’ll get an alert email or notice on your phone. For example, if the temperature is too low or too high that something is going to burst, the Nest will alert you immediately.

About Saving Energy

Nearly half of the energy is taken by the heating and cooling system and the thermostat control them, and that is the key to save energy bill. A good smart thermostat can save you a lot of money.

The 3rd gen Nest Learning Thermostat is a smart wireless programmable thermostat that can do so. It can learn your habits and what temperature you like, and then it can build a energy-saving schedule according to your habits. It is said that since 2011 Nest has saved more than 4 billion kWh of energy altogether. Some studies show that it can save about 10-12% on heating and 15% on cooling, that means it can save the money worth itself in 2 years. Nest can show your energy consumption day by day, and at the end of the month, An Energy History will provided in your Home Report. From the report you can know when you use the most energy, how much you saved.

About Learning Program

The Nest Learning Thermostat can learn your habits and preferences so that it can run automatically without complicated settings. Just use it for a week or two, then it programs itself. But be careful, don’t change the settings too frequent because that will make it learn more hard and takes a long time to learn what you want. If you prefer the traditional mode of thermostats, you can close the learning program then it will be a normal thermostat.

Pros

Easy to install

Can learn your preferences over time, don’t need to program.

You can control and monitor from afar with the App.

Saves money

CONS

Expensive: At around $250, the Nest is expensive than the programmable thermostat. And the remote sensors cost extra money.

Only two-year warranty

2nd Generation vs 3rd Generation Nest Thermostat

The 3rd Generation is the latest one, with new functions like 40% bigger touch screen, FarSight detector. Bigger screen will make it easier to operate and can be seen from distance, FarSight is more sensitive. But the upgrade is not so much, the basic functions of the 2nd and the 3rd is the same. And 2nd generation will have the same function after an update of software. It is my habit to buy the latest one because usually it will get better after services. But to Nest, there seems to be no difference. If you don’t need the bigger screen, 2nd is enough.
